How to Define Your Style Personality: Using Style Types

Are you tired of feeling like your wardrobe lacks a cohesive identity? Do you find yourself browsing through fashion magazines, Pinterest boards, or Instagram feeds, searching for that elusive sense of personal style? Everyone has a unique style that reflects their personality, but sometimes it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly what that style is. Understanding the different style types can help you identify what resonates with you and create a wardrobe that truly reflects who you are.

One of the first steps to creating your personal style is identifying the style types that best align with your preferences. This blog post will explore some of the most popular style types, including Classic, Romantic, Relaxed, Minimal, Heritage, Preppy, Edgy and Bohemian. Understanding these categories can serve as a starting point to help you define and create your own unique personal style.

How can I incorporate my individuality and unique qualities into my personal style?

To assist you, I have summarised eight of the most common traditional style types that my clients usually resonate with. It may be that you wholeheartedly align yourself with one or that you find yourself associated with elements of a few. No matter which type you fall into, it's important that it represents you so that you feel confident in your choices. There is no right or wrong.

Classic Style Personality

The classic style personality is timeless, elegant, and refined. It emphasizes clean lines, tailored silhouettes, and neutral colors. If you appreciate polished looks, traditional patterns like stripes or houndstooth, and timeless pieces such as a well-tailored blazer or a crisp white button-down shirt, you may gravitate toward the classic style personality. Incorporating quality basics and investing in well-crafted pieces will help you maintain a sophisticated and put-together appearance. You admire the styles of Kate Middleton and Holly Willoughby.

Romantic Style Personality

The romantic style personality is characterized by its feminine, dreamy, and whimsical aesthetic. Soft pastel colors, lace, ruffles, and floral motifs are central to this category. Flowing dresses, delicate blouses, and romantic details like bows or ribbons are typical features of the romantic style. Embrace your love for all things pretty and embrace a soft and ethereal fashion sense that exudes elegance and grace.

Casual/Relaxed Style Personality

The casual style personality is all about comfort and effortless chic. If you prefer a laid-back and relaxed approach to fashion, this category is for you. Casual style revolves around practicality, simplicity, and a focus on comfortable fabrics. Denim, t-shirts, sneakers, and cozy sweaters are essential components of a casual wardrobe. Mix and match basic pieces, add layers, and opt for neutral colors or subtle patterns to achieve a stylish and relaxed look.

Minimal Style Personality

If you appreciate clean lines, simple silhouettes, and a pared-down aesthetic, then the minimal style personality might be your calling. Minimalists prefer a muted color palette, often gravitating towards neutrals such as black, white, gray, and beige. Key wardrobe staples for minimalists include well-fitted basics like crisp white shirts, tailored trousers, and classic denim. Embracing minimalism means investing in high-quality, versatile pieces that stand the test of time. Minimalist accessories include delicate jewelry, sleek watches, and understated bags. This style is perfect for those who prefer to keep things simple and effortless.

Heritage Style Personality

Heritage style is all about embracing timeless elegance and celebrating traditional craftsmanship. Think of classic designs, rich textures, and refined details. Heritage enthusiasts often draw inspiration from vintage fashion, historical periods, or cultural heritage. Tweed blazers, tartan prints, cable-knit sweaters, and leather brogues are staple pieces in a heritage wardrobe. Incorporating heirloom accessories, like a vintage watch or a family heirloom necklace, adds a touch of sentimental value to the ensemble. Heritage accessories include leather bags, traditional watches, and classic hats.

Preppy

You admire a polished and preppy look inspired by 60s fashion, then the preppy style personality might be your cup of tea. Preppy style embraces tailored clothing, crisp collared shirts, chino pants, and boat shoes. Classic patterns such as stripes, plaids, and argyle are often seen in preppy outfits. Accessories like pearl necklaces, headbands, and structured handbags complement the overall refined aesthetic. Embrace a vibrant color palette and don't be afraid to mix and match patterns for a playful yet sophisticated look. Preppy accessories include colorful belts, statement watches, and preppy bags.

Edgy Style Personality

If you have a rebellious streak and love to make a statement, the edgy style personality might resonate with you. Edgy fashion is all about embracing non-conformity and pushing boundaries. Black is a staple color, and leather jackets, studded accessories, ripped jeans, and bold prints are common elements of this style. Experiment with unconventional pairings, unique textures, and edgy accessories to inject attitude and individuality into your outfits.

Bohemian Style Personality

For those who embrace a free-spirited and artistic vibe, the bohemian style personality is a perfect fit. This category is characterized by flowing fabrics, eclectic patterns, and a mix of vintage and modern elements. Earthy tones, floral prints, flowing maxi dresses, layered accessories, and fringe details are typical features of the bohemian style. Embrace your inner wanderer and express your creativity by incorporating bohemian-inspired pieces into your wardrobe.

Creating Your Own Personal Style

Understanding the different style types can help you identify what resonates with you and create a wardrobe that truly reflects who you are. However, it's important to remember that you don't have to fit neatly into any one type. Your personal style can be a combination of different types, or it can be entirely unique to you. There are many deviations and subdivisions of these classic style types which all have their own individual nuances, such as Dark Academia which is similar to a preppy style but in darker tones, or grunge which has similarities to Rock but more oversized, or athleisure which has it’s routes in sportswear to create a Relaxed style. You may also prefer to dress with details from specific eras, such as the 50s style. Whatever your preferences, you can make your style your own by getting really clear on elements that you do or don’t like and building them into your clothing and outfits.

When creating your personal style, start by identifying what you love about each type. Do you love the clean lines of classic style, but also want to incorporate some bohemian pieces into your wardrobe? Do you love the boldness of edgy style, but also want to add some romantic pieces to soften the look? Experimenting with different styles and mixing and matching different pieces is the key to creating a personal style that is uniquely you.
