5 Versatile Jackets for Spring

Are you ready to swap out your thick winter jacket for something more lightweight? I’ve picked the most versatile spring jackets to lighten up your outfit whilst still keeping off the chill.

  1. Denim Jacket

A staple spring jacket to add to your wardrobe if you haven’t got one yet. It adds a causal dynamic to those outfits which maybe feel a bit dressed up otherwise or is perfect teamed with materials that just don’t look right with other fabrics. It will work with everything from boho maxi dresses, joggers and skirts.

  • Styles which are gently tailored will be the most flattering, the boxy longer styles that are very in this season are best avoided as they will date quickly and not be flattering to most.

  • Avoid the ‘Canadian Tuxedo’ of yesteryear by wearing with other denim items a few shades lighter or darker than the jacket.

  • Given the nature of denim, one of the most common fit issues I come across with denim jackets is them being too tight across the shoulders, so you may need to size up. Go for one with stretch in or a slight dropped shoulder.

2. Trench Coat

An eternal British icon to pull together an outfit. It’s a timeless staple which gets a few seasonal updates each year depending on the current trends, but go for a classic and it will last you for years. It looks effortlessly chic with jeans, suits, dresses and skirts for a sophisticated look. The variety of trench coats available has expanded the variety of lengths, lapel, as well as the shades to make it easier to find your ideal trench coat that will match both your body shape and complexion.

  • The perfect length for all shapes and height is on the knee. If you are petite try going shorter. Longer lengths are best for those who are taller, otherwise it will limit your styling options when wearing flat shoes.

  • If you are top heavy, go for a single breasted style without storm flaps or epaulettes, which will accentuate and widen your top half. Flared hems with balance out heavier hips.

  • Use the belt to cinch in your waist or tie it around the back for definition if you want to wear it unbuttoned

3. Utility Jacket

The military inspired jacket is simple and practical. It’s a great piece to update your casual wardrobe. As the jacket is quite masculine in it’s styling, you can pair it with a pretty dress, animal print or blush tones for a feminine look.

  • Military green is very popular and looks amazing on those with warm or muted colouring. For those with cool or bright colouring, try a more greyed hue.

  • The traditional straight, utilitarian cut off the jacket is perfect is you are straighter in the bodyline, but if you have curves opt for one where you can cinch in the waist.

  • If you are busty, go for styles with collars and be cautious of breast pockets which can add further volume to your bust.

4. Biker Jacket

The perfect way to add a bit of an edge to your look and works perfectly with midi skirts, cropped trousers, dresses or even joggers. It’s definitely the jacket to have if you love wearing bottoms other than jeans but struggle to match a jacket.

  • Balance the form fitting shape of the jacket with a slightly looser bottom half.

  • If you don’t yet have a leather jacket, go for a neutral colour either in black, grey or camel for maximum versatility.

  • It doesn’t have to be leather either, there are some amazing faux suedes and faux leathers on the High Street which have a much more affordable price tag and look just as good- plus you can often put them in the washing machine which you definitely can’t do with the real stuff!

5. Blazer

If you’re opting for a bit of a smarter look this spring, then blazers are the perfect match for you, plus they go from day to night with ease. The new style is longer than normal, hitting between the hip and knees which can make it difficult to style for certain body shapes. If you are heavier on the bottom half, a regular blazer will be most flattering on you.

  • Choose a blazer that is tailored to your frame to avoid it swamping you.

  • Try pushing the sleeves up for a relaxed look and can also be very flattering.

  • Wear it over a maxi skirt, or just keep it simple to dress up a t-shirt and jeans. Longline blazers look best paired with pieces of the same length or slightly longer.
